S±vatthiya½ viharati, jetavane an±thapiº¹ikassa ±r±me. Tatra kho bhagav± bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “bhikkhavo”ti. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkh³ bhagavato paccassosu½. Bhagav± etadavoca–

Abiding at S±vatthi, in Jeta's grove of An±thapiº¹ika. There the Sublime One addressed the monks: “Monks!” Those monks replied: “Yes, venerable sir.” And the Sublime One said thus:

“lokassa, bhikkhave, samudayañca atthaªgamañca desess±mi. Ta½ suº±tha, s±dhuka½ manasi karotha; bh±siss±m²”ti. “Eva½, bhante”ti kho te bhikkh³ bhagavato paccassosu½. Bhagav± etadavoca–

“Monks, I will teach you the genesis and extinction of the mundane. Listen well and pay close attention, I will speak.”

“Yes, venerable sir” The monks replied.

Then the Blessed One said:

“Katamo ca, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo? Cakkhuñca paµicca r³pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññ±ºa½. Tiººa½ saªgati phasso. Phassapaccay± vedan±; vedan±paccay± taºh±; taºh±paccay± up±d±na½; up±d±napaccay± bhavo; bhavapaccay± j±ti; j±tipaccay± jar±maraºa½ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassup±y±s± sambhavanti. Aya½ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

“And what, monks, is the genesis of the mundane? Dependant on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises. With the union of these three is contact. Contact is the supportive condition for the sensation of feeling, the sensation of feeling is the supportive condition for craving, craving is the supportive condition for identification, identification is the supportive condition for becoming, becoming is the supportive condition for birth and birth is the supportive condition for aging and death, sorrow, grief, weeping, pain and mental distress. This, monks, is the genesis of the mundane.”

“Sotañca paµicca sadde ca uppajjati sotaviññ±ºa½. Tiººa½ saªgati phasso. Phassapaccay± vedan±; vedan±paccay± taºh±; taºh±paccay± up±d±na½; up±d±napaccay± bhavo; bhavapaccay± j±ti; j±tipaccay± jar±maraºa½ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassup±y±s± sambhavanti. Aya½ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

“Dependant on the ear and sound, ear-consciousness arises. With the union of these three is contact. Contact is the supportive condition for the sensation of feeling, the sensation of feeling is the supportive condition for craving, craving is the supportive condition for identification, identification is the supportive condition for becoming, becoming is the supportive condition for birth and birth is the supportive condition for aging and death, sorrow, grief, weeping, pain and mental distress. This, monks, is the genesis of the mundane.”

“Gh±ºañca paµicca gandhe ca uppajjati gh±ºaviññ±ºa½. Tiººa½ saªgati phasso. Phassapaccay± vedan±; vedan±paccay± taºh±; taºh±paccay± up±d±na½; up±d±napaccay± bhavo; bhavapaccay± j±ti; j±tipaccay± jar±maraºa½ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassup±y±s± sambhavanti. Aya½ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

“Dependant on the nose and odors, nose-consciousness arises. With the union of these three is contact. Contact is the supportive condition for the sensation of feeling, the sensation of feeling is the supportive condition for craving, craving is the supportive condition for identification, identification is the supportive condition for becoming, becoming is the supportive condition for birth and birth is the supportive condition for aging and death, sorrow, grief, weeping, pain and mental distress. This, monks, is the genesis of the mundane.”

“jivhañca paµicca rase ca uppajjati jivhv±viññ±ºa½. Tiººa½ saªgati phasso. Phassapaccay± vedan±; vedan±paccay± taºh±; taºh±paccay± up±d±na½; up±d±napaccay± bhavo; bhavapaccay± j±ti; j±tipaccay± jar±maraºa½ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassup±y±s± sambhavanti. Aya½ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

“Dependant on the tongue and tastes, tongue-consciousness arises. With the union of these three is contact. Contact is the supportive condition for the sensation of feeling, the sensation of feeling is the supportive condition for craving, craving is the supportive condition for identification, identification is the supportive condition for becoming, becoming is the supportive condition for birth and birth is the supportive condition for aging and death, sorrow, grief, weeping, pain and mental distress. This, monks, is the genesis of the mundane.”

“k±yañca paµicca phoµµhabbe ca uppajjati kay±viññ±ºa½. Tiººa½ saªgati phasso. Phassapaccay± vedan±; vedan±paccay± taºh±; taºh±paccay± up±d±na½; up±d±napaccay± bhavo; bhavapaccay± j±ti; j±tipaccay± jar±maraºa½ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassup±y±s± sambhavanti. Aya½ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

“Dependant on the body and sensations, body-consciousness arises. With the union of these three is contact. Contact is the supportive condition for the sensation of feeling, the sensation of feeling is the supportive condition for craving, craving is the supportive condition for identification, identification is the supportive condition for becoming, becoming is the supportive condition for birth and birth is the supportive condition for aging and death, sorrow, grief, weeping, pain and mental distress. This, monks, is the genesis of the mundane.”

“Manañca paµicca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviññ±ºa½. Tiººa½ saªgati phasso. Phassapaccay± vedan±; vedan±paccay± taºh±; taºh±paccay± up±d±na½; up±d±napaccay± bhavo; bhavapaccay± j±ti; j±tipaccay± jar±maraºa½ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassup±y±s± sambhavanti. Aya½ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

“Dependant on the mind and phenomena, mind-consciousness arises. With the union of these three is contact. Contact is the supportive condition for the sensation of feeling, the sensation of feeling is the supportive condition for craving, craving is the supportive condition for identification, identification is the supportive condition for becoming, becoming is the supportive condition for birth and birth is the supportive condition for aging and death, sorrow, grief, weeping, pain and mental distress. This, monks, is the genesis of the mundane.”

Such is the cessation of this entire mass of suffering. This, monks, is the extinction of the mundane.”

“Dependant on the ear and sounds, ear-consciousness arises. With the union of these three is contact. Contact is the supportive condition for the sensation of feeling, the sensation of feeling is the supportive condition for craving. But with the cessation and fading without remainder of that craving is the extinction of identification, with the extinction of identification is the extinction of becoming, with the extinction of becoming is the extinction of birth and with the extinction of birth is the extinction of aging and death, sorrow, grief, weeping, pain and mental distress. Such is the cessation of this entire mass of suffering. This, monks, is the extinction of the mundane.”

“Gh±ºañca paµicca gandhe ca uppajjati gh±ºaviññ±ºa½. Tiººa½ saªgati phasso. Phassapaccay± vedan±; vedan±paccay± taºh±. Tass±yeva taºh±ya asesavir±ganirodh± up±d±nanirodho; up±d±nanirodh± bhavanirodho, bhavanirodh± j±tinirodho. J±tinirodh± jar±maraºa½ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassup±y±s± nirujjhanti. evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. Aya½ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa atthaªgamo.

“Dependant on the tongue and tastes, tongue-consciousness arises. With the union of these three is contact. Contact is the supportive condition for the sensation of feeling, the sensation of feeling is the supportive condition for craving. But with the cessation and fading without remainder of that craving is the extinction of identification, with the extinction of identification is the extinction of becoming, with the extinction of becoming is the extinction of birth and with the extinction of birth is the extinction of aging and death, sorrow, grief, weeping, pain and mental distress. Such is the cessation of this entire mass of suffering. This, monks, is the extinction of the mundane.”
